JOINT INITIATOR:WANG YI
2024-08-10
Researcher at China National Academy of Painting
Professor and PhD Supervisor
As a contemporary sculptor and painter, Wang Yi has been involved in industrial design in recent years, dedicating himself to advancing techniques of intangible cultural heritage. He is regarded by critics as an experimental avant-garde artist who incorporates eastern imagery into contemporary industrial design products, utilizing techniques of intangible cultural heritage as a medium of expression within the context of contemporary design language. Therefore, he is considered to have redefined the new artistic tendencies of contemporary eastern industrial design art.
To illustrate, Wang Yi used the Hongqi Guoli luxury sedan series, a hallmark of Chinese automobile brands, as a case study. He transformed the landscape imagery found in Chinese literati paintings into contemporary and readable abstract art elements, subsequently applying them to the automotive industry through traditional techniques such as lacquer and fine wood marquetry. In this way, he completed the four-stage transformation of eastern imagery, readable contemporary design elements, traditional techniques, and contemporary industrial products, aiming to realize his vision of protecting and reviving traditional craftsmanship on the brink of extinction through the manufacturing of industrial products.
Wang Yi is a researcher at the China National Academy of Painting, a member of the council of the Experimental Art Committee of the China Artists Association and the Poetry Institute of China, a specially appointed researcher at the China Academy of Cultural Heritage, and a member of its inaugural Academic Committee. He holds doctoral degrees in fine arts from the China National Academy of Arts and in economics from Wuhan University. Wang Yi is a professor and PhD supervisor at East China Normal University, a distinguished professor at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and an honorary academician at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Italy.
